"Military history is usually written by those who study it and less so by those who live it. Tommy Cox clearly lived it. In Tango Charlie, Cox writes an intense, exciting, and insightful account of his years on submarines during the Cold War. Tango Charlie is an informative and fitting tribute to those who served in silence throughout the decades long rivalry between two superpowers." -- Claude Berube, Political Science Department, U.S. Naval Academy, and co-author of A Call to the Sea: Captain Charles Stewart of the U.S.S. Constitution
Tango Charlie, the military phonetic alphabetic for the letters T and C, was Tommy Cox's operator's sign during his years in the Navy. Retired as a Senior Chief Cryptologic Technician in 1979, Cox spent much of his career riding submarines as a part of the Naval Security Group. The first part of this book is a fascinating memoir of the Cold War, written by someone who was in the middle of a lot of the action.
During and after his military career, Tommy Cox had a second career as a singer-songwriter. The second part of his book contains the lyrics to 25 of his songs, and discusses how they came to be written. Cox has created his own musical genre, writing and singing songs about submarines and the men who serve in them.
